Thoughts On Love And Smoking Podcast #20: Antony Daly/586 Records.

So, after a considerable time away on gardening leave we've actually come back home, put our dancing trousers on, and managed to pull our fingers out and do a tiny bit of work in order to bring you some of the shiniest, freshest, newest music from the glitterati (sic) of the electronic music scene. So without delay, it's with a hearty cry of "WEEEE'ZE OOT?!" that we welcome Peterlee's finest, Mr Antony Daly to this new round of podcasts!

If you didn't already know, Tony has been one of the mainstays of the Newcastle music scene since the late 90's. Resident at 'Reverb' in Newcastle, early 2000's and more recently, resident and co-promoter of the 'Suono' parties. Equally happy, on the dancefloor, or providing the music for the dancer, he's also the man behind the counter running Newcastle's finest independent record shop, 586 Records.

When people eulogize dance music culture, they often praise the values of freedom and acceptance that arise in the ideal club setting, but that freedom isn't always felt in the musical policy. For whatever reason—either a fear of losing the floor or orthodox tastes—many DJs still serve up hours of unremarkable music that barely varies in tempo or sonic makeup.

This is what makes Tony such a compelling DJ by comparison. His sets are hypnotic and decidedly funky, but he seems intent on bucking music conventions with whatever he plays.
Tony's selections have always had a sonic richness and sun-kissed aesthetic that makes him irresistible for true fans of both house and disco's classic style or their modern mutations. Though he's just as comfortable with sleek techno rhythms and writhing acid lines. This mix shows him running at full tilt, cherry-picking bits from the corners of his musical universe. A glowingly soporific mix of hazy, vitamin D infused dance music. All subdued basslines, lightly chiming pianos, and sparkling drum strikes. A skilful melange of rhythms, tones and lovely melody.

If you're lucky, you can still catch the big fella playing in bars and clubs through the city and further afield, so if you get the chance, be sure to go see him.
Make no mistake, big Tern is still a peak time party provider!

Go on.
Gerramongst it!!
